Racing legend Sir Stirling Moss has retired from motorsport at the age of 81
Sir Stirling, whose career spanned more than 60 years, took the decision after qualifying for the Le Mans Legends race, which is on the Le Mans 24 Hours support card. He had been due to partner Ian Nuthall in the event in a Porsche RS61.
“This afternoon I scared myself and I have always said that if I felt I was not up to it or that I was getting in the way of fellow competitors, then I would retire," he told his official website. “I love racing, but now it is time to stop."
Moss won more than 200 races in his career as a racing driver, including victories in the British and Monaco grands prix, the Mille Miglia and the Targa Florio. He finished runner-up in the Formula One world championship drivers' title four times.
