Nissan will design, engineer and construct its second-generation Qashqai entirely in the UK

Nissan will design, engineer and build the second-generation Nissan Qashqai in Britain.

Renault Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn revealed the news this morning to prime minister David Cameron. Nissan says its decision will safeguard 6000 jobs in the UK and the commitment represents a £192 million investment in the country.

The new Nissan Qashqai will be designed at Nissan’s Paddington design centre in London, before development switches to its technical centre in Cranfield. It will be built at its Sunderland production plant, where almost one million units of the first-gen Qashqai have been built, making it the firm’s most popular car to date.

Sunderland is also responsible for building the Note and Juke models and will start production of the all-electric Leaf from 2013. A stand-alone factory will also be built at the Sunderland site to construct lithium-ion battery packs for Renault-Nissan’s range of EVs.
