Ford is claiming class-leading fuel efficiency for the next-gen Ford Focus Econetic, which will make its debut at next week’s Amsterdam motor show.
The firm says the new model - which uses Ford’s 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine in a new state of tune, with 104bhp - will return 80mpg and emit “less than 95g/km” of CO2 when it arrives in dealerships in spring 2012. That’s more than 10mpg more and 15g/km less than the current Focus 1.6 TDCi.

The Econetic’s motor gets a new injection system and turbocharger to help improve efficiency. But a string of other features contribute to the low fuel consumption and emissions; there’s common ‘green’ vehicle tech including stop-start, brake energy recuperation, low-resistance tyres, a revised final drive ratio and a shift indicator light.
The Focus also features an active grille shutter, which uses vents to control airflow to the cooling system and engine bay, and can close when no cooling air is required. Ford calculates that when shut, the unit reduces CO2 emissions by two per cent.
Ford has yet to announce pricing for the Econetic, which will be offered in five-door and estate form. But the extra features are likely to result in a modest price premium over regular diesel Focuses.
