Vauxhall has confirmed it will launch a cabriolet version of its Astra in 2013.
The new Astra Convertible is likely to follow the current market trend for cabrios with fabric roofs; there is no mention of the retractable hard-top, which Vauxhall calls TwinTop, being retained in the new car.
One of the Astra drop-top's key rivals, the Golf cabrio, is the latest to feature a fabric roof and Volkswagen is not expected to replace the Eos, which uses a retractable hard-top roof, beyond its current life cycle.

The new Astra cabrio will share its Delta platform with the rest of the Astra range. It will be built alongside other Astra models at the firm’s Gliwice plant in Poland.
“The new Convertible will be a great addition to our product lineup,” said Opel/Vauxhall CEO Nick Reilly. “It follows the long-standing tradition of highly emotional and legendary Opel/Vauxhall Cabrios that provided important halo effects on our brand.”
Its launch in 2013 will coincide with the launch of Vauxhall’s stylish new city car.
