Firm could put its dramatic lightweight concept into production as a track-only special, says boss

Lamborghini has suggested that its exciting Sesto Elemento concept from the recent Paris motor show could be put into production as a track-only special.

Company boss Stephan Winkelmann told Autocar that Lamborghini is increasingly likely to make several examples of Sesto Elemento. It uses Superleggera running gear but is made from a new material, called forged carbon, that helps to keep its weight down to a mere 999kg.

“We are testing the Sesto Elemento at the moment and if it all goes well then we could look at a limited production run,” said Winkelmann. “But it would not be homologated because there are complications with things like airbags. It would be for track use only.

“We do not want to ever produce and show cars just for a museum,” he added.

It’s thought that the Sesto Elemento’s price could exceed that of the one million euro (£850k) Reventon. When asked if the new car’s production run would be similar to that of the Reventon, of which 20 were manufactured, Winkelmann said, “It would be that at the maximum.”

it seems like an almost backward step to rush out an overpriced garage ornament instead of putting an extra 12-18 months into it to get a fully fledged and developed product

Oh, I'm not suggesting any of it is a good idea! Merely that to build a 999kg car, they had to ditch all the stuff that makes is a street-legal car, and can't just be screwed on.
