Revised engine will make it the most fuel efficient in the class, Audi claims

Audi has announced a new diesel engine for the 2011 Q7. The entry level 3.0-litre TDI is based on a de-tuned version of the previous model, making it less powerful, but more efficient.

The new engine produces 201bhp and 332lb ft of torque, a decrease of 36bhp and 74lb ft of torque.

Alterations to its turbocharger and camshafts as well as the addition of a stop-start system give the new Q7 figures of 39mpg and 189g/km CO2 emissions.

Audi estimates that the new Q7 will reach the UK in the second half of 2011. Prices for the UK have not yet been confirmed, but prices in Germany have been confirmed at 51,800 euro (£45,375)

I actually like the look of it, but I can't imagine any possible scenario in which I would consider buying one.

39mpg means it is almost as economical (40 to 45) as the new Volt. Personally I have always had a wicked streak in me that fancies the Q7, with the V12 6.0 litre diesel with 750 ft/lbs of torque, mainly to drive the anti 4x4 activists mad.

Well, there is something slightly less cynical about a Range Rover in that it at least has a genuine 4x4 heritage and compared to a Q7 is a model of elegance but, looked at objectively, it is another unnecessarily overengineered and overweight method of moving people from point A to point B - and has an unfortunate track record of breaking down en route at point C.
