Next-generation 500 will not be radically altered by Fiat designers

Senior Fiat designers are currently deciding the future direction for the next 500.

The car has been a huge hit for Fiat and is just about to go on sale in the US, mildly revised and made in Mexico.

Fiat designers, though, are reluctant to radically alter the next-gen car and are currently thinking that it should become “our Mini”, indicating not much will be done to alter its iconic shape.

The new Fiat 500 was launched in 2007 – 50 years after the original model – and came to the UK in January 2008.

Fiat engineers are also hard at work on a low-cost city car which will have similar dimensions to the Toyota iQ and is being developed to replace the bargain-basement Seicento.

The much-mooted Topolino city car has now been axed as a result.

How can they possibly consider a next generation of a"retro" design ! They nailed it this time , but they wiould be unlikely to repeat the trick. Other than making improvements under the skin , the most they should consider are dummy louvres in the bootlid to cool the engine that isn't there.
