Maserati's flagship saloon will get four-wheel drive and stop-start

Maserati's next-generation Quattroporte will be offered with four-wheel drive and stop-start technology, according to the firm's CEO.

Harald Wester said the new sports saloon, due in 2012, would also weigh around 15 per cent less than the current model and fuel consumption and CO2 emissions would be improved by around 25 per cent.

Wester claims the addition of four-wheel drive will help Maserati's flagship model compete with its German rivals.

Other measures in the pipeline include downsized V6 and V8 engines, as well as an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox.

Car review

The Maserati Quattroporte has character, balance and a wonderful engine, but its ride and gearbox mean it’s ultimately flawed.

If their second go at the market is as good as their first stab,
The current model is actually the Quattroporte V and so I guess it will be their sixth go..... Also is anyone else underwhelmed by the 25% improvement in economy? The current car manages, even by fast saloon standards, a poor 19mpg so the new model, with stop start, will nearly do 24 mpg??

I don't know what it is, but I've just never gotten on with the nose of the Quatroporte. I think that particularly in its facelifted guise the nose doesn't look in proportion with the headlamps. The interior has always looked cheap as well.
