BMW Sauber applies to drop manufacturer from its team name

F1 team Sauber is set to finally drop the BMW moniker from its team name.

Although BMW officially left the sport last year, selling its team to Sauber, it continued to be part of the team's official title, which is currently BMW Sauber Ferrari F1 Team.

The BMW name was carried forward to the 2010 season as Sauber did not request a pre-season title change. Unconfirmed reports suggest this was so that Sauber did not jeopardise its rights to BMW's prize money from the 2009 season.

"We will submit an application, but the timing has yet to be decided," said team boss Peter Sauber when asked about the name change. "It will happen some time this season."
