Two Twingo-based rally cars will be available from April

Renault has launched two new Twingo-based rally cars, designed for competing in lower formulas of the sport.

The Twingo Renaultsport R1 is essentially a standard 133 Cup Twingo production car fitted with extra safety features including a roll cage and two protective tubes bolted to the body shell.

The R1 can compete in all regional, national and international rallies and has been conceived for those operating on low budgets. Its engine and gearbox are identical to the road car's, with the only modification being an ECU that offers more torque at lower revs.

The Twingo Renaultsport R2 is much more competition-focused than the R1 and the road car. Its 1.6-litre engine has been tuned to produce 158bhp, 37bhp more than in its production guise. There's 118lb ft of torque, too, and the engine is mated to a five-speed sequential gearbox. A ZF limited-slip differential also features.

Other additions include bump and rebound-adjustable shock absorbers to cater for different driving styles and conditions. The brakes are upgraded 280mm ventilated discs at the front, with 240mm solid discs at the back.

The shell has been strengthened to comply with the FIA’s Group R regulations. Styling changes include a wider front air intake, sculpted side sills and extended front and rear arches. The interior has also been stripped out to reduce weight.

The R2 upgrades will be available from April as a special kit starting from 27,990 euros (£25,350), excluding tyres. Those buying the kit will be offered the chance to buy the standard production car for a special price.

Re: Renault launches Twingo rally car

i think rollcages should be standard on all competition cars. this r1 seems quite reasonable, but the r2 does seem a bit expensive at 25,000 euros just for the kit

I wonder, can Ross Kemp still fit in the boot?
