BMW confirms several joint ventures for its Mega City electric car

BMW has dropped its clearest hints yet about the form of its much-discussed 'Mega City' car.

Developed under BMW 'Project i' initiative, the Mega City will be made of carbonfibre-reinforced plastics, powered by a battery-driven electric motor and be designed for "extreme light weight".

BMW revealed the company had signed a co-operative deal with German company SGL Carbon which will the material produced in both Europe and the US, suggesting two production sites for the town car.

"We are acquiring pioneering future technologies and raw materials that we need for our Mega City vehicle on competitive terms," said BMW chief executive Norbert Reithofer.

BMW has also entered a joint venture with Bosch and Samsung in order to produce lithium ion batteries, which will be used for the 'Mega City' vehicle.
