Swindon three-door Honda Civic Type R to be called 'Euro'

British-built Honda Civic Type Rs are to be exported to Japan from next year.

The model will called the Type R Euro to distinguish it from the four-door Type R Civics on sale in Japan and will be sold in limited numbers.

The cars are built at Honda’s plant in Swindon and a spokesman for the car maker said it was good news for workers.

“It is another outlet for Swindon and goes some way to securing the future of the plant.”

The 198bhp Type R Euro will have the same spec as the British version and slots underneath the 222bhp four-door version in Japan.

Japan is the third country outside Europe to import the Type R hatch, following Australia and South Africa.

Swindon also builds the five-door Civic, Civic Type S and CR-V for Europe and will start production of the Jazz for Europe from this autumn.
