AMG’s next Black Series super-coupe will be based on the latest Mercedes E-class coupe, but it will not necessarily get vast power gains to achieve the required performance.
AMG sources say the new car will employ weight-saving techniques and fine-tuning of the mechanicals to boost the car’s ability. The emphasis will be on improving the car’s agility rather than outright speed.
There will not be a regular AMG version of the E-class coupe, and a Black Series C-class saloon has been ruled out because these limited-run AMGs have to be based on two-door models.
The C63 AMG will get a more powerful version, though. At the moment it is the least powerful AMG, with 457bhp, but an upgraded model is on the cards.
“For this performance version you can count on more than 500bhp but less than 525bhp,” said an AMG engineer.
The source also said there are no plans to use the seven-speed Speedshift MCT gearbox from the E63 and SL63 in the C63, despite the fact that it will fit the car.
