New official press shots of crucial new model released

Official pictures of the new Saab 9-5 have been leaked ahead of its official unveiling at September’s Frankfurt motor show. The new 9-5 is a crucial to the future of Saab under the ownership of Koenigsegg and replaces the 13-year-old first-gen 9-5.

The images are official press images and were leaked by a German magazine. Based on GM’s Epsilon II platform, the new 9-5 features sleek styling with long, sloping C-pillars and blacked-out A-pillars, to give it an aircraft-like wraparound screen, which is a nod to the company’s aviation past.

It features an airy, open cabin and a sleek, coupe-like profile, similar to the Vauxhall Insignia, while there are LED lights at the rear. Inside, the elegant cabin features leather seats, a central navigation system and a thick-rimmed steering wheel taken from the Insignia.

As well as the 9-5 saloon - shown here in its final production form, and due next spring - Saab engineers are finishing off a 9-5 Sport Combi estate and the 9-4X SUV, which is aimed at the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. Both cars are due later in 2010.

The 9-5 will be offered with two different types of suspension - standard and premium - as well as the option of four-wheel drive. Engines will range from a turbocharged 2.8-litre V6 to a four-cylinder diesel that emits less than 140g/km of CO2.
