GM stalwart may not retire at the end of 2009 as planned

General Motors' former product chief Bob Lutz may not retire at the end of 2009 as he originally intended, according to reports in America.

Outspoken Lutz is currently GM's head of marketing and communications. He announced in February that he was to retire at the end of the year after GM’s finances spiralled out of control and required government intervention.

Sources close to Lutz have said that he is now set to reverse his decision to step down and will continue his current role, while also having a hand in future product design.

Earlier this week, a US bankruptcy judge approved the sale of a new GM to the US treasury. A press conference is scheduled in the coming days to outline the firm’s plans and an announcement about Lutz could be part of this.

Ex-GM CEO Rick Wagoner was forced out of his position by US President Barack Obama and was replaced by Fritz Henderson. Henderson has reportedly agreed to Lutz’s request to stay on as part of new GM
