Tata has reported it has received 500,000 orders for the Nano so far - that's around as many cars as the firm can build in the next two and a half years.
The Tata Nano went on sale on 9 April, with orders for the initial phase of sales set to close on 25 April. However, the firm is expecting 750,000 to a million orders by the time of the deadline, and the demand has led to an unusual system of ordering a car.
Order forms were sent to 30,000 locations around India, and anyone who filled one out was charged around 300 rupees, or about £4. That alone has raised about £2 million so far. The Nano costs from £1700-£2200 to buy.
To keep the system fair, all applicants are then being entered in a raffle, to decide who will get one of the first 100,000 cars being built.
