The Toyota Auris range has been revamped with new or improved engines.
The biggest change is an all-new 1.6-litre petrol engine, called Valvematic, which replaces 1.6 VVT-i. Improved valve technology means that the new engine is more efficient, producing 2.6mpg more at 43.5mpg, while power is up by 8bhp to 131bhp. CO2 emissions also fall from 166g/km to 153g/km.
A six-speed manual gearbox is offered as standard, and there's the option of Toyota's six-speed Multimode transmission, which allows sequential manual changes using paddle gearshift controls, or an automatic mode.
Fuel consumption for the Multimode model rises to 45.6mpg, while CO2 emissions drop to 146g/km.
While the 1.33 VVT-i petrol version with engine stop/start that was introduced in late 2008 remains unchanged, every diesel engine has been updated to return better fuel mileage and lower emissions.
The trim line-up has also been simplified to four options: T2, TR, T Spirit and SR180.
Prices start at £12,900 for the 1.33 VVT-i T2 three-door and rise to £18,965 for the 2.2 DCAT SR180 five-door.
