McLaren's F1 team chief will step down on 1 March

Ron Dennis will step down as head of the McLaren Formula One team on 1 March in order to spend more time on his company's other interests, the McLaren F1 team chief has announced.

Among the things that Dennis wants to concentrate on is the company's Ferrari-challenging supercar, due to be launched in 2010.

Speaking at the launch of the new MP4-24 F1 car, Dennis denied that the economic downturn would alter his plans. “We have a clear intention for the road-car programme,” he said. “But we understand the challenge in the current economic climate.”

Dennis also announced that McLaren CEO Martin Whitmarsh would replace him as the McLaren F1 team principal.
