The Gumball 3000 rally was brought to an end yesterday (3 May) when a competitor was involved in a fatal accident. A Porsche 911 Turbo driven by Brit Nicholas Morley collided with a Volkswagen Golf in Macedonia. The driver of the Golf died at the scene and his wife is critically ill in hospital. Both Morley and his co-driver Matthew McConville were stopped on the Albanian border, although it has not yet been confirmed whether the men believed they could legally leave the site, or whether it was a hit and run incident. However, it is known that Morley is still in custody and could face up to a year in jail.A spokesman for the Gumball 3000 rally, Maximillion Cooper, said that "we are very saddened by what has happened and feel that it would be wrong to continue." The rally finished last night in Bratislava, instead of the finale that was planned in London. The rally has been subject to increasing criticism in recent years, as rich but inexperienced drivers take supercars to their limits on public roads.
