The Mercedes G55 AMG is back on sale in Blighty in right-hand-drive form, despite the introduction of the new GL.
Forget Humvees and Range Rovers: when it comes to the ultimate big, bad 4x4, the G-wagen still rules the roost, over 25 years since it first appeared. But just to make sure, Merc has been tweaking the AMG range-topper.
Unlike the new GL, the G55 still uses the old 5.4-litre supercharged V8, but it’s been retuned to muster 493bhp (up from 469) and 516lb ft. That helps to shave 0.1sec off the 0-62mph time, which is now a faintly alarming 5.5sec.
Standard equipment has also been enhanced to include bi-xenon headlights, cornering foglights, new lighter grey-painted 18-inch alloy wheels and scratch-resistant paint.
The G55 AMG is available to special order only, and costs from £77,500. Deliveries start next month.
