Prius sales top half a million

Worldwide sales of the Toyota Prius petrol-electric hybrid have passed the half-million mark, with 504,700 cars sold by the end of April.

The first-generation Prius was launched in Japan in 1997, and arrived in the UK in 2000, but it is the second-generation car, introduced in 2003, that has been the much bigger success, especially in North America.

The Prius is now being made outside Japan for the first time, with production for the Chinese market starting in Changchun, China last December.

Toyota says it aims to widen further its hybrid vehicle line-up, which currently also includes the Lexus RX and GS hybrids.
