Ford reveals new people-carriers

Ford has released official details and images of its new Galaxy and S-MAX, to be launched at next week’s Geneva motor show.

The Galaxy, which is now an all-Ford product in contrast to its predecessor (developed in conjunction with Volkswagen), features a novel seating system that allows 32 possible configurations. Its model range will include a two-litre petrol engine and two diesels, a two-litre and a 1.8-litre.

Ford has high hopes for the more sporting S-MAX, even though the MPV market has been fragmented into smaller sectors in recent years. Despite its more dramatic looks, the S-MAX is still being sold on practicality – Ford’s pre-launch information proudly states that it boasts 26 storage compartments. Its range-topper shouldn’t want for performance, though – it uses the turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine from the Focus ST.

Both new models feature computer-controlled damping and additional safety features over the outgoing Galaxy, including driver’s knee airbags.
