Good news for fans of the iconic Fiat 500, the cute city car is likely to make a reappearance as the Trepiuno concept car gets the go-ahead for production.
Parent company Fiat Group has signed an agreement of cooperation with Ford Motor Company to jointly develop a pair of new city cars for 2007, which will come to the market as the reborn 500 and a replacement for Ford's much-loved Ka.
Like the Citroen C1/Toyota Aygo/Peugeot 107 triplets, the new cars will benefit from lower development costs and economies of scale in production, with both set to be built in Fiat's Tychy factory in Poland.
The sub-B segment cars will be based on the current Fiat Panda's platform and will share Fiat power units - likely to include a 1.2 petrol and the excellent 1.3-litre multijet diesel - but both Fiat and Ford claim that each car will remain 'true to the individual parents' brand identities'.
Around 120,000 versions of each brand will be made annually when full production begins.
