Nissan and Honda’s British-based car plants report production boosts

Nissan’s highly-successful Sunderland plant is due to increase annual production from its current level of 340,000 to half a million cars a year by early 2007.

The boost comes from the arrival of the Micra C+C – up to 28,000 of which can be produced annually at the Karmann plant within the factory – and the new Tone mini MPV (right), along with the news that the production version of the Qashqai mid-sized 4x4 – which goes on sale early in 2007 with a more euro-friendly name – will be built in Sunderland.

Not to be outdone, Honda workers have already begun building the new Civic on the firm’s Swindon production lines. The five-door version goes on sale in January next year and Honda hopes the new car will increase Civic sales by 50 per cent, with a target of 120,000 annual sales in 2007.
