Honda’s diesel CR-V, the i-CTDi, has only been on sale for a few weeks, but there are already savings to be made. The diesel 4x4 recently won Autocar’s compact 4x4 group test, and is likely to be in big demand, but we still found a tasty saving through internet broker drivethedeal.co.uk. Having negotiated a bulk discount in advance, the web retailer can save you £995 on an £18,600 CR-V i-CTDi SE, with a delivery time of two to three weeks. What’s more, if your budget will stretch to Executive trim, which includes satellite navigation, climate control and heated leather seats as standard, drivethedeal will reduce the price from £22,800 to £21,511 – only £111 more than the list price of the equivalent petrol version.
When we explored other familiar avenues, we could only find money off the older petrol model. Broadspeed.com, for example, is offering £1188 off a CR-V 2.0 VTEC in Executive trim, but no money off its new oil-burning sibling.
The official line from Honda dealerships is that ‘we don’t compete with the internet’. Franchises in Chiswick and Stratford-upon-Avon told us that, due to the levels of unsatisfied demand, they would only be offering discounts in ‘exceptional circumstances’. But with this sort of competition, it is well worth asking.
