Development work has re-started on MG Rover’s long-delayed RDX60 medium car (above), Autocar has learnt. It’s also believed that work on its unique interior has been revived with fresh injections of cash. Some sources say that MGR is close to re-starting project X120, the three-door ‘coupé’ MG version of the car. Elements of the now-defunct engineering firm TWR and Italian styling house Pininfarina could be involved.
MGR is close to sealing a deal with Chinese automaker SAIC, and strongly denies that the company will be sold off over the next few years. However, other well-placed sources say that SAIC will take ownership.
MGR bosses must realise that disposal of the firm, even in part, would be very difficult. MGR had a £500m ‘soft loan’ from BMW and the German firm holds the rights to the Rover brand. According to BMW, any change in MGR’s ownership would require ‘a renegotiation’ of contracts covering the loan and use of the Rover brand.
