Mercedes will soon stop building supercharged cars, according to Stuttgart sources. This means the death of the Kompressor badge (above). The company will switch its forced induction applications to turbocharging, as on the Mercedes and Maybach V12 models and next year’s new A-class 2.0-litre turbo.

Turbos are cheaper and quieter, engineers claim. Supplier Bosch believes 40 per cent of Europe’s petrol cars will be turbocharged by 2008.
