Volvo has topped the pile at the first British Insurance Car Security Awards. The new annual ceremony uses the results of tests on more than 5000 cars carried out at the Motor Industry Repair Research Centre at Thatcham in Berkshire since 1998, and the awards are designed to push manufacturers towards continued improvements in car security. Testing assessed features including alarms, immobilisers, double locking, identification and security glazing, and the results were used to develop security ratings, supported by the Home Office and in co-operation with the Association of British Insurers, Lloyds, the AA and the Department for Transport. The results can be seen at www.thatcham.org. Volvo was commended as best overall car maker ahead of Mazda and VW.
‘These awards will help focus attention on the continuing problems presented by car crime in this country,’ said Thatcham chief executive Peter Roberts.
