Currently reading: Huge queues for 911

If you want to get your hands on the new Porsche 911 (997) within a year of it being launched, you’d better get cracking. That’s the message from Porsche dealers, already deluged by punters wanting to get into the earliest cars after the September on-sale date.

One Sussex dealer we contacted has already got 99 customers on its waiting list, all having put down a £3000 deposit for the privilege. The saleswoman we spoke to couldn’t commit to delivery dates, though, if we wanted to join the waiting list.

It was better news at a central-London outfit. It had only 40 names on the waiting list when we went shopping and just £1000 was required to join the queue. The salesman reckoned we could expect to wait anywhere from nine months to a year before we could get our hands on a new Carrera 2.

It was the same situation in Northamptonshire, too, where the salesman was taking £3000 deposits on a Carrera 2 and, more confidently, £5000 up front to join the waiting list for the forthcoming Turbo and C4S variants. He wouldn’t put a time frame on these, but predicted that we could get a Carrera 2 in 12 months.
