Currently reading: Renault earns its stars

The chairman and chief executive of Renault has denied that his company engineers cars simply to perform well in the industry-standard Euro NCAP crash tests.

‘The rules of the game are known,’ Louis Schweitzer told Autocar. ‘Euro NCAP is a level playing field and I just think some of our rivals are jealous of our achievements.’

Renault has launched a string of five-star cars in recent years, including the new Mégane, Scénic, Laguna (above), Vel Satis and Espace. Only the Clio and Kangoo (four stars) and non-UK Twingo (three stars) score less.

Schweitzer admitted that he could not guarantee five-star ratings on every future model, but vowed to continue placing the emphasis on safety.
