Ford’s all-conquering Focus returned to the top in October after its shock drop to second after a 40-month reign when it was overtaken by the Vauxhall Corsa in September.

The diesel market is still strong, prompting the SMMT to estimate that total 2003 diesel sales will be 27 per cent of the market, compared with last year’s record 23.5 per cent.

UP

International Motors Group had a bumper month with sales up 53 per cent on last year, thanks to the new Subaru Legacy (above) making up for a poor performance at Isuzu.

Daewoo’s recovery continues apace, with its impressive new range spurring October sales of 1446, more than five times last year’s figure.

Small British manufacturers celebrated a bumper month, with TVR, Noble and Caterham collectively achieving a 450 per cent rise.

DOWN

Citroën and Peugeot lost 48 per cent and 19 per cent respectively compared to last October. A 10 per cent slump on last October and weaker Elise sales (right) have contributed to total Lotus sales being down a quarter on 2002.
