Brussels bureaucrats are plotting a shake-up of driving licences across Europe. The changes mean that British drivers will have to renew their driving licences every 10 years rather than carrying the same document until they are 70.
However, officials in Brussels say that the proposed directive will not require drivers to take medical or eye-sight tests when they renew their licences.
The new credit-card-sized licences will be standardised in Europe to counter fraud and can be used to store information such as penalty points. However, there are no plans to have uniform penalties around Europe.
