The arrival of the controversial new BMW 5-series is already paying dividends for anyone snapping up late-plate versions of the outgoing model.
Autocar reader Dave Jenkins is one of those who has already taken advantage of some spectacular deals from the BMW network. He picked up a September 2002 530d Sport auto with just 1000 miles on the clock and a host of extras for 26,000. That's a tempting 11 grand wiped off the original list price.
Bargains are even better if you veer away from the sought-after diesels. We spotted an 02-plate 525i Sport auto with 9k miles on the clock and a sticker price of 23,000. And that's before the haggling begins. If you're after a 530i, they're currently carrying about a grand premium. But bear in mind that all these cars are fully loaded, so don't even think about buying one without leather or an uprated hi-fi at the very least.
There's still no hope of persuading BMW dealers to start knocking cash off the new model, however. Shopping for a new 530i auto, a quick ring around the dealers confirmed that salesmen are still holding firm. Wait several months for the pre-order backlog to be cleared and it could be a different story though.
