Kia Ray to be shown at the Chicago motor show

This is the first image of the Kia Ray, a concept car that hints at the company's vision of a future plug-in hybrid car.

The concept will be unveiled in the metal at the Chicago motor show next month.

It was styled by the Kia Design Centre America, and the company says the Ray "will contribute to Kia’s ongoing development of alternative-fuel vehicles".

The Kia Ray features a working hybrid powertrain, while its exterior design is described as being "more of a concept, designed to show that hybrid cars can be good looking and sporty".

Kia already has hybrid fuel-cell prototypes being evaluated in California and Korea. Sister company Hyundai is putting a hybrid vehicle on sale in Korea later this year, and Kia is set to follow suit in 2011.

In addition, the firm will begin on-road testing of petrol and diesel hybrid vehicles in Britain this year, although no date has been set for when they will go on sale in the UK.

The Chicago motor show begins on 11 February.
