The Buick Regal GS – the US version of the Vauxhall Insignia VXR – has been revealed at the Detroit motor show, and points to a performance-oriented future for Buick.
“We’re serious about getting back into the performance game with Buick to fill the gap left by Pontiac,” said GM vice-chairman Bob Lutz.
The GS does away with the VXR’s 321bhp 2.8-litre V6 in favour of a 252bhp, 295lb ft 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. The GS keeps the VXR’s all-wheel drive and six-speed manual gearbox, while an electronic limited-slip differential also features. The GS can get from 0-60mph in less than six seconds.
Vauxhall’s torque steer-reducing HiPerStrut front suspension is included on the GS, which maintains negative camber while cornering with the aim of improving grip and cornering power. Four-link independent suspension features at the rear.
Like the VXR, the Regal GS comes with an Interactive Drive Control System, which allows the driver to set the chassis to Normal, Sport or GS mode. These modes change the suspension settings, throttle response and steering sensitivity.
The exterior styling closely mirrors the VXR’s, keeping its 20-inch aluminium wheels, twin exhausts, twin front air intakes and integrated rear spoiler. Inside, the VXR theme continues with a black headlining, flat bottomed steering wheel and Recaro sports seats.
The Detroit show car is in Olympic White paint, with metallic detailing. Officially billed as a concept, the GS is likely to remain relatively unchanged when it makes production later this year.
Craig Bierley, product marketing director for Buick, said: “Like the Regal, the Regal GS is based on the Insignia, and we believe it will reinvigorate Buick’s storied Gran Sport legacy.”

Re: Buick Regal GS revealed
Where is the Buick version of the Insignia made?
Re: Buick Regal GS revealed
Hmmmm a Turbo 4 banger.... I wonder where GM got that idea from?????
Re: Buick Regal GS revealed
I think this is a bad move by GM. They should offer the Americans both engines, and keep the awd set-up on both.
I'd love the V6 VXR (but not in white)!
