Peugeot 508 concept has been revealed at the Geneva motor show

This is the “5 by Peugeot” concept car which has been unveiled at the Geneva motor show and which previews the new Peugeot 508.

The Peugeot 508 concept is described by Peugeot as "another indication of the changing face of Peugeot" and as "providing an insight into the marque’s future ambitions in the large luxury vehicle segment". As the 508 - the successor to the 407 - it will be a Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Insignia and Renault Laguna rival.

Powered by Peugeot’s so-called Hybrid4 technology, which will go into production in 2011 in the Peugeot 3008, it has a 163bhp 2.0 litre HDi FAP engine linked to a 37bhp electric motor. The combination produces a maximum of 200bhp, an electric only mode for low speed operation and four-wheel drive when required. It averages 74.3 mpg and 99g/km of CO2.

Peugeot says the Hybrid4 technology can be fitted to a range of naturally-aspirated engines according to market requirements, as well as to different models of cars on different platforms.

The car also highlights some future Peugeot design directions, with the grille in particular reminiscent of the Peugeot SR1 concept car's, which was unveiled earlier this year.

The 5 by Peugeot's dimensions are 4860mm in length, 1880mm width and 2815 in wheelbase. Its kerb weight is 1880kg with full tanks.

Re: New Peugeot concept revealed

I think it looks a little bit like a Merc CLS in side profile. Being that as it may it's probably going to be a good car for Peugeot. Of course that's provided they don't price it so high that it's German rivals can compete! I don't think any German faithful will turn away if they cost the same.

Personnally however I reckon it's a rather handsome looking thing.

Nothing new, looks like a traceover of an Insignia
I know that design is subjective, but really Richard H - this looks nothing like that insipid lump of molten soap!!

Small, light, unpretentious hatch with understated but classy styling, and with a bit of oomph.... surely perfect for the 'teens' or whatever this next decade will be called!
Let's face it; much of the car industry needs to go on a diet. My old 306 D Turbo was a 'family hatch', but it would now be dwarfed by the average supermini, hence in market terms I've downsized. It would be interesting to see if Peugeot could recapture the 205 GTi market. VW has managed to keep the rock-solid image of the Golf GTi intact, whilst various GT/E, GSi, VXR, ST, RS and other rivals have come and gone, and Renaultsport has successfully added a halo to Peugeot's most direct rival, yet Peugeot themselves seem to have taken their eye off that particular ball. I can't help but think that it's going to be a difficult market to claw back from the Mini and its premium pals. I guess we have to remember that Peugeot hasn't been entirely unsuccessful, the 207 is still a big seller and they've pioneered the mass-market CC (loved by consumers, derided by the motoring press). Personally, I quite like the 207's looks, but if the 508 does prove to be a 'grower', I'd be happy to see the more understated look filters down to the smaller models.
