Mini is developing its hottest model yet. Speaking ahead of the New York motor show, Mini's Dr Kay Segler said the Mini GP II will be launched at Mini United 2012 in La Castellet in May.

Little is known about the model, although it is likely to carry a tuned version of the Cooper S’s 1.6-litre turbocharged engine. Power is likely to be rated at around 220bhp.

Mini said: "With a particularly high-performance turbo engine, racing-oriented suspension technology and exclusive, aerodynamically optimized body components, the Mini John Cooper Works GP follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, which caused a stir back in 2005 as the most powerful and the fastest road-approved Mini at the time."

Test mules have been spotted. The Mini GP II will have a lower ride height and bespoke bumpers, rear diffuser and rear tailgate spoiler. A modern take on the original GP’s four-spoke alloy wheels are likely to be fitted as standard.

It is not yet known whether the GP II will have two or four seats; the original had a stripped-out rear with an exposed strut brace. Like the previous car, which was limited to 2000 units, it is likely the Mini GP will be a sought-after special edition.

Dr Segler also revealed the Mini Countryman JCW will launch in North America this year.

A special edition version of the hatchback will also be launched. The Mini 10 Years Anniversary will be offered to American buyers, celebrating a decade of the brand's involvement in the market. Based on the Mini Cooper, it will be offered with a choice of three colour schemes: red, white and blue reflecting the colours on the American flag.

Clearly, BMW are intent on milking the Mini brand for all it is worth. And you can't blame it. There must be massive profits involved. When you look at a tiny Mini in a car showroom and see the huge sticker price, you don't doubt that BMW is on to a good thing! Engelbert
