A four-seat coupe version of the all-new Mazda 6 is under consideration, company bosses have told Autocar

Coupe and four-wheel drive versions of the new Mazda 6 could be offered, officials at the company have confirmed.

Speaking ahead of the Moscow motor show, where the new saloon version of the Mazda 6 has been revealed, chief designer Akira Tamatani confirmed a four-seat coupe was under consideration.

"There is no decision, but I would love to make one," said Tamatani. "The first job is to make the saloon and estate, but from this position a coupe is not so far away."

Speculation has previously suggested such a car would go on sale in a year after the launch of the new saloon and estate in January 2013, meaning a 2014 launch at the earliest for other spin-off models.

Meanwhile, program manager Hiroshi Kajiyama confirmed that all-wheel drive systems were being evaluated by Mazda.

“There are no set plans, but we are studying the possibility of introducing all-wheel drive – it would be a good weapon with which to establish the brand,” said Kajiyama. “It is my belief that there is a very strong opportunity for us if we bring it to market.”

I hope the coupe comes to

I hope the coupe comes to fruition!

There is a lull in 4 seat coupes these days, especially from manufacturers. The GT86 is a step in the right direction, a coupe Mazda 6, especially with a decent (and fuel efficient) engine would be a great car!

(The inevitable suv tank crossover urban assault/schoolrun version is a no brainer in terms of private sales)
