Ford's three-cylinder Fiesta has the smallest engine offered in the USA

Ford hopes to have the most fuel efficient engine on sale in the US when it adds the 1.0-litre three-cylinder Ecoboost engine to the Fiesta line up. It has just been launched at the Los Angeles motor show

Although the car hasn’t yet been tested by the US’s Environmental Protection Agency, which provides official fuel consumption figures, it should easily achieve over 50mpg.

It will only be available as the more powerful 123bhp, 143lb ft version that, in the Focus, emits 114g/km of CO2.

The 1.0-litre Ford Fiesta is set to go on sale in the US next year. No other manufacturer currently offers a three-cylinder engine in the USA.

Ford skeptic

The current Fiesta is one of the most depressing cars I have ever driven. It has a well-weighted steering. Refined ride quality. Quiet cabin. Modern interior. But what a let-down this 1.25 82bhp engine is? Am I surprised that most reviewers highly recommend it? While it's all right for local traffic upto 40mph, it struggles on open roads to pick up speed. Once it's upto speed it's okay. But getting upto speed is like driving in sand. The engine is totally breathless.

Now this 1-litre miracle is here and experts are falling over each other recommending it. After feeling let down by two Fords I am a Ford skeptic. 0-62mph, mpg, carbon emissions, all sound fantastic, but we already know from Focus that it struggles to get anywhere close to the claimed mpg.

Hybrid is the way forward!

The 1.25 petrol is a very old engine although admitedly not as old as the old old 1.3, in the Fiesta 2 generations ago it was superb as it was a much smaller, lighter car. If the next gen Fiesta carries this engine over it would pay Ford to follow the lead of Peugeot with their 208 and cut the flab.

The EcoBoost should be able to get nearer to the stated figures as its much lighter than the Focus so needs alot less thrashing. I had a Focus EcoBoost on loan a couple of weeks ago for review and it is an amazing engineering feat (the engine), its just not the right car for it.

Time will tell, it could be the future.

Will this replace the 1.6

Will this replace the 1.6 petrol currently offered in the American Fiesta, or join it in the range? & if it joins it, will it be cheaper than the 1.6, or more expensive, as it is more modern? (a bit like Fiat charges more for their 0.9 Twinair than their 1.2 4cyl)

Will be interesting to see. Personally I think it will be a massive hit in America, reading car forums from over there a lot of people have been crying out for more efficient Euro cars & engines options for years.

The three-cylinder EcoBoost...

Engine will apparently be sold alongside the larger 1.6 and will be around $995 more expensive.
