New turbocharged Civic Type R set to undergo testing at the Nurburgring

The new Honda Civic Type R will begin testing at the Nurburgring later this year

Although it is not scheduled to be launched until 2015, company officials say that the ambitious performance targets - which include setting the fastest ever front-wheel drive lap time around the Nurburgring - mean that public testing will begin early.

Honda has confirmed that the car will have between 265 and 300bhp, suggesting power for the new Civic Type R will come from a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine.

The manufacturer claims that knowledge gleaned from its participation in the World Touring Car Championship, using a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine, will directly influence its new Type R unit.

The new Honda Civic Type R will initially be sold in Europe only, with non-European sales likely to follow if the car is well received. No prices have yet been announced.

The Honda Civic is an impressive achievement and a worthy rival to the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus, but it isn't quite up to class-leading standards

Doesn't need to be Nurburgring developed for that.  Trust me Honda Type R's are stiff enough to begin with!

Whilst I have a suspicion that it will be a blown 1.6, there is a lot of me that would like it to be a blown two litre lump!

How can you  consider fwd

you  consider a fwd 1.6t civic taking the lap record of nurburgring?

It would be too expensive to give a 1.6 300bhp, which is what it would need.

From Honda past recent history it will be a large heavy car, so will be a 2.0 turbo minimum.

Did the 345bhp Focus RS500 ever set a proper time at the ring btw?

New 330bhp+ Focus RS in 2015 will be doing some times on the Ring too, so it's an arms race that may not be won. It might have been a silly title to pre cliam by Honda.

.....

The only other option I can imagine is using a high tune 1.6T with a tuned hybrid pack from a CRZ with it to make 300bhp and having loads of mid range torque aswell as power. With a battery pack just big enough to last 12miles of heavy use.
