The next-generation Volkswagen Golf Plus is being prepared ready for an expected debut in Frankfurt next week

Volkswagen is putting the finishing touches to its new Golf Plus high-rise hatchback ahead of an expected debut at next week’s Frankfurt motor show. UK sales are tipped to start early next year.

Like its predecessors, the new Golf Plus is likely to offer increased headroom and a more spacious cabin than the standard five-door hatchback on which it’s based. It will carry over the design themes set down by the standard Golf hatchback. These pictures suggest the Golf Plus will feature light units very similar to those used by the Volkswagen Golf hatchback.

It is thought that the Golf Plus will offer 150mm of extra headroom than the hatchback, and will offer a more flexible seating configurations.

The MQB-based Golf Plus will feature an engine line-up closely mirroring that of the Golf hatchback. Six-speed manual and DSG gearboxes will be available, and it is likely that VW's forthcoming 10sp DSG unit will be offered.

When the first Golf Plus came

When the first Golf Plus came out, which was a variant of the Mk 5 Golf, Volkswagen said it would be so popular that when its replacement came out (assuming it's the Mk 7 based one rather than the Mk 6 which was a facelifted Mk 5) it would be the best selling Golf model and that the conventional hatch would be no more. Even back then, I could foresee that would not be the case and there will be no change here with the forthcoming model.

I cannot wait....

I cannot wait to see what this looks like when it is revealed. I have no idea what it will look like, hopefully it will have elements of VW design. Oh, wait, it will be the current Golf with a high roof. Unlike the new Touran which will look like a Golf Plus with a high roof.

I get the idea of design

I get the idea of design evolution, but am I the only one who thinks the current Golf looks more dated than the one it replaced? The Golf has never been a stand-out in design-terms, but the previous generation is considerably more attractive in person than the current mark.

Even with the camo here, you can pretty much imagine what the Golf Plus is going to look like...

Never mind, I'll just get a SEAT Leon instead... a car that looks far more stylish in person than it did in photos.

Yes i agree with that. The more I see of it the less I like it. The lower trim models, especially, look very plain, and I just can't get on with that droopy front end. As far as I'm concerned It will go down with the mark 3 as one of the least attractive Golfs.
