VW Touran-sized hybrid MPV Mitsubishi concept makes European debut in Geneva

The Mitsubishi AR concept has been revealed to the European audience at the Geneva motor show.

It marks a return to the MPV segment for Mitsubishi  following the discontinuation of the Grandis in 2011. The AR uses the same 1.1-litre three-cylinder direct-injection turbo hybrid powertrain as the XR-PHEV. It uses a belt-driven generator to instantly restart the engine and delivers "gutsy" torque under acceleration.

The company says the concept "offers both the mobility of an SUV and the occupant space of an MPV". The concept features an enveloping interior design and is expected to include seating for seven passengers.

At 4350mm long, 1780mm wide and 1690mm high, the Concept AR is similar in size to the VW Touran. Weight saving continues inside with a "no-frill design", according to its makers.

The concept is a four or six-seater, depending on layout, while the front pair of chairs can rotate through 180 degrees to turn the cabin into a living space. Mitsubishi says the focus was on creating a relaxing environment; ambient roof lining and slits in the sides allow "gentle winds and other sounds" to eminate into the cabin.
