BMW i8 sold out for 2014

The BMW i8 hybrid supercar is sold out until the end of 2014, despite deliveries to customers not beginning until next year.

The £100,000 carbonfibre-bodied car is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine and electric motors, and records a 0-62mph time of 4.4sec despite averaging 113mpg on the official combined fuel-economy cycle. However, BMW's head of marketing, Ian Robertson, revealed that pre-orders already account for the entire run of 2014 production.

"We are delighted with the interest in the car, which will stand at the heart of what BMW is about - performance and sustainability," said Robertson, who did not elaborate on how many i8s would be built in 2014.

Robertson also revealed that BMW has been inundated with test drive requests for the BMW i3 city car. Such is demand, at the current rate of uptake following test drives, BMW insiders estimate it could be up to six months from ordering a car to final delivery.
