Audi bosses are still undecided which type of car will carry the much-mooted Audi A9 flagship badge

The direction of the mooted new range-topping Audi A9 is still under discussion according to marketing boss Luca De Meo, who says he personally believes that a conventional coupe or Sportback wouldn't be innovative enough.

Speculation that Audi is preparing to launch a new range-topper has been rife since boss Rupert Stadler said: "We see a great deal of potential, especially in the SUV and prestigious full-size car category."

But speaking at the Detroit motor show today, De Meo said discussions were ongoing. "If we do something, I would like it to be a statement for the brand.

"I want Audi to stand for innovation and establishing the future, and a conventional design, while attractive, wouldn't necessarily stand for that. People but that kind of car for prestige or looks, but I want more than that."

The Audi A8 is a highly capable and desirable luxury saloon that's very easy to live with, despite its flaws

Who cares?

It'll be huge, bloated, ugly, arrogant and chosen by drivers with similar traits.

Beautiful A9

In the picture shown by Autocar some time ago the Audi A9 looks mighty, mighty impressive. Certainly more impressive than the Jaguar XJ.
Jaguar has lost its way with the latest XJ that looks like a big Ford and the XF that looks like a bland Japanese car, apart from the fact that the XJ's ride is way too firm for a luxury saloon - it can even get a little bouncy in the back.
These are no Jaguars anymore, just Tata's.

At least six wheels. Or

At least six wheels.

Or maybe tracks.
