The Qoros 3 hatchback has made its world debut at the Geneva motor show.
The new C-segment hatchback draws heavily on the styling of the 3 saloon and is designed to appear youthful and sporty. The 3 hatch is based on the same modular platform as its larger saloon sibling but features new C-pillars and bodywork as well as a new rear roof cross-member, which Qoros says helps to maintain rigidity.
Both cars also share a wheelbase, but the hatchback is 177mm shorter than the saloon. Qoros says that by keeping the saloon's relatively long wheelbase the hatch will offer "generous interior space for a vehicle in the compact segment".
The saloon and hatch also share the same 1.6-litre naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines, offered in league with a six-speed manual gearbox and an optional dual-clutch automatic transmission. Performance figures for the hatchback have yet to be revealed, but the 124bhp naturally aspirated 1.6-litre engine is enough to propel the 3 saloon to 62mph in 11.6sec, dropping to 9.7sec when powered by the 154bhp turbocharged unit.
As well as its new rear tailgate, the 3 hatchback gets new rear-light clusters, a new front grille, new bumper and different fog lights to set it apart from the saloon. Qoros says these elements create a "bolder face" for the hatchback.
Inside, the five-seat hatchback shares many of its features with the saloon, although new colour combinations and materials have been added. An eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system is included as standard.
Featured as part of the 3's infotainment suite is QorosCloud, which offers 3G-based services like vehicle monitoring, social networking and "enhanced navigation".
The 3 hatchback will be available with four equipment levels at launch, with entry-level Essence models getting keyless start and air conditioning as standard. Experience spec adds dual-zone climate control, leather trim, and a rear parking camera. Experience Plus models get a large glass sunroof.
At the top of the range, Elegance trim adds cruise control, heated front seats, keyless entry and an upgraded anti-theft system.
No pricing information has yet been revealed, but the 3 saloon undercuts the MG 6 by almost £500 in China, with prices starting at RMB 119,900 (£11,745).
The 3 saloon was awarded the highest Euro NCAP score of 2013, with Qoros becoming the first Chinese brand to achieve a five-star safety rating.
