Rugged body cladding and full-length electric sunroof feature on new Adam Rocks Air, which goes on sale today with first deliveries expected later this month

The new Vauxhall Adam Rocks Air, which made its debut at the Geneva motor show earlier this year, has gone on sale priced from £14,695.

Following on from the concept of the same name shown last year, the production car features revised and retuned dampers, springs and rear suspension geometry, and sits 15mm higher than standard Adam models.

For the first time, a full-length electrically folding canvas roof is offered in the Adam range. The three-layer roof is constructed from neoprene sandwiched between canvas and folds onto the C-pillars in seven seconds. Vauxhall says there is no impact on body stiffness and the Adam’s luggage capacity is retained.

Anthracite-coloured cladding lends a rugged appearance and extended wheelarches house a choice of 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels. It gains silver skid plates, a new exhaust trim, a number of new paint colours and three roof shades.

Two interior trims, specific to the Adam Rocks Air, are available. One is taken straight from the Rocks concept with peanut-coloured door panels, steering wheel and gear and handbrake gaitors. The other is dark brown with blue stitching.

Three engines will be offered in a total of five power outputs. The new 1.0-litre three-cylinder Ecotec flagship engine is available with 113bhp and 125lb ft. It's capable of reaching 62mph in 9.9 seconds, has a top speed of 121mph and can return 55.4mpg with CO2 emissions of 119g/km.

The rest of the engine range comprises a 69bhp 1.2-litre unit and a 1.4-litre with outputs of 86bhp/96lb. The 1.2-litre covers the 0-62mph sprint in 14.9 seconds with a top speed of 103mph, while the 1.4 covers the same distance in 12.5 seconds with a top speed of 109mph. Both return over 50mpg.

A choice of five or six-speed manual transmissions are available.

The Adam Rocks Air retains the option of Apple and Android-compatible smartphone connectivity. The Intelilink system, priced from £275, includes a 7-inch touchscreen through which a range of apps can be downloaded and operated.

Prices for the Adam Rocks Air start at £14,695 for the 1.2-litre version, rising to £15,015 for the 1.4-litre model and £16,695 for the 1.0-litre car.

Is the Vauxhall Adam supermini special enough to provide an answer to the Fiat 500 and Mini, or merely an exercise in style and marketing?

The names for trim levels,

The names for trim levels, option packs and colours for the Adam range have been cringeworthy from the start, so this just continues that trend. I'm not sure about all this cladding, it seems rather over-fussy for me, but I applaud Vauxhall's decision to offer a straightforward full length sunroof, rather than following the contrived efforts of the DS3 and 500.

Don't mind the concept of the car really. Things like the Rover Streetwise etc all have their place but the name is dreadful. You'd be embarrassed to say it in public. 'Oh what do you drive' oh its erm erm its an Adam Rocks Air.

Whaaaaaaaaat?!

15000 for that? When there are better offerings from Renault- Twingo, and the Smart and of course the ORIGINAL Fiat 500?

No wonder why GM is leaking sales in Europe it has a higher opinion of itself compared with potential customers.
