Order books have opened for Citroën's new C4 Cactus, which has gone on sale priced from £12,990 with first deliveries expected in October.
The Cactus, described by Citroën as "a fresh philosophy for a constantly evolving world", was revealed in production form at the Geneva motor show earlier this year. That came only a year after the Cactus concept car was first seen in 2013, which pioneered the model's Airbump impact-absorbing panels.
Pitched as a radical alternative to the likes of the Volkswagen Golf, the Cactus aims to be cheap to own and run. It's also very light, weighing in at just 965kg in base form - some 60kg lighter than an entry-level Ford Fiesta.
Autocar has so far tested two versions of the Cactus, an entry-level 1.2-litre Puretech 82 with 81bhp and the 91bhp e-HDI 92 Airdream ETG6.
Three trim levels are available, dubbed Touch, Feel and Flair. Basic Touch models come with cruise control, Citroën's seven-inch infotainment system, front electric windows and a DAB radio. Feel specification adds a leather steering wheel, air conditioning, an arm rest and Bluetooth connectivity, while top-spec Flair versions get integrated satellite navigation, a rear parking camera and tinted rear windows.
Pricing for the C4 Cactus starts at £12,990 for a Puretech 75 manual model in Touch trim, and rises to £18,190 for an e-HDI 91 ETG6 in plush Flair specification.

One of these looks very likely to be replacing my Honda CRV when it goes; I hope it can recapture some of the charm of my beloved GSA.
