Mercedes-Benz has crowned its new S-class coupé line-up with the S65 AMG, which will cost from £183,065 when order books open later this week. First deliveries of the range-topping model are expected towards the end of this year.
Powering the S65 AMG coupé is a twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre V12 engine with 621bhp and 738lb ft of torque. That's enough to allow the model to reach 62mph in 4.1 seconds – one tenth of a second faster than the S63 AMG coupé – with a limited top speed of 155mph. Mercedes also says the S65 is capable of returning up to 23.7mpg, alongside CO2 emissions of 279g/km.
The S63 AMG coupé, which produces 576bhp and 663lb ft from its twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 direct injection petrol engine, is priced at £125,595.
The S-class Coupé range will be priced from £96,565 for the S 500 Coupé AMG Line, although that lowest-priced variant won't arrive in the UK until early next year. Domestic deliveries of the other two versions of the luxury two-door will begin in September.
The enginex are coupled to Mercedes' seven-speed automatic transmission, with three modes dubbed Controlled Efficiency, Sport and Manual selectable by the driver. A start-stop function is also available.
Other technologies included on the new model is a lithium-ion battery, which saves up to 20kg over a conventional setup. Also fitted is Mercedes' Magic Body Control Suspension system, which allows the car to 'lean' into corners to improve handling.
AMG 20-inch alloy wheels are fitted all-round, alongside a new sports exhaust and minor bodywork adustments. Inside, an AMG sports steering wheel features alongside new sports seats, while standard equipment includes a head-up display and Mercedes' touchpad-controlled infotainment system.
