Concept car at SEMA previews new global racer, which will be ready to race in 2016

A Mazda MX-5 concept car at SEMA in Las Vegas heralds a new global race series for the fourth-generation compact roadster.

The Global MX-5 Cup race series will simultaneously take place in Asia, North America and Europe from 2016, with an end of year shootout for the respective best performers from each country at Laguna Seca at the end of the year.

Mazda has not confirmed technical details of the SEMA concept, but does state power comes from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder SkyActiv petrol engine.

“Beginning this winter, Mazda Motorsports will undertake a development period to select the optimum tyres, suspension and powertrain and safety modifications,” said Mazda in a statement.

The cars will be sold ready to race from a sole supplier.
