New Volkswagen Golf GTD Estate revealed

The Volkswagen Golf GTD Estate is the brand's first hot diesel estate.

It aims to combine decent performance and impressive fuel economy in a practical, family estate car.

All GTD Estates are powered by the same 181bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine that's in the Golf GTD hatchback. It drives the GTD Estate to 62mph in 7.9sec, just 0.4sec slower than the hatch, and produces 280lb ft of torque. Provisional average fuel economy is 64.2mpg.

The GTD Estate gets a sportier bodykit than other Golf wagons that includes more aggressive bumpers, flared sills, a honeycomb radiator grille as well as smoked lens covers to the tail-lights. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels are standard, though 18in alloys will be available as an option. Black roof rails, bi-xenon headlights and dual chrome exhaust pipes complete the look.

Inside, there are sports seats, stainless steel pedals, a golfball-style gearknob and aluminium trim on the steering wheel.

Options will include leather upholstery and a Sports and Design package that will include tinted windows and red brake calipers.

Pricing and specification information will be available closer to the April on-sale date. Cars are expected to arrive in the UK in June.
